I'll have to flip through Gambetta's book again. It's a good one! But why do you think gruesome actions are better noticed/remembered/commented on? Do you think it could signal something about the perpetrator? E.g., greater formidability or some sort of perceived invincibility?

Quite right, I was unprecise. They seem to happen in more complex societies where communication remains small scale (face to face, word of mouth). It might be state societies, or smaller scale like headhunters (mixing hunting with agriculture).
