With (20/20) hindsight, we should have had low prior beliefs in social psych priming studies that assume the mind is VERY badly designed (e.g. attitudes change if you change the way you move your head...) Better start with hypo's about what a bio system is designed to do...https://twitter.com/nicholaraihani/status/1004104377269923841 …

Another nail in the priming coffin: this time it's "(implicit) religious primes don't seem to affect prosocial behaviour much" https://psyarxiv.com/6amfe  HT @ME_McCullough (who wrote it!)

They always bothered me from an evo perspective. Really? People can be that easily led by the noise? By a prime?!

Yes, it did suggest a weird picture of the mind. People (or rather their minds) are not that easy to sway. Otherwise attracting mates would be *vastly* easier. Unfortunately...

Agree with your overall approach, but temporary attitude shifts don’t show bad design (assuming behavior is not fluctuating wildly). Sensitivity to environmental and personal conditions can be the mark of a *well* designed system.

Yes. Fair point. Confirms that people should have worked more on the model (what's our hypo about the mind? when would attitude change be functional) rather than on clever parlor tricks (hold a pencil on upper lip --> frown --> neg attitude....) that dont even replicate.

Although I take your point, isn’t that exactly the thinking behind a lot of the hypotheses in priming studies manipulating cues to environmental factors (eg pathogen prevalence)? I haven’t seen much evidence those replicate any better.

I agree that the priming effects that replicate best seem to be ones that build directly on mechanistic explanations of the underlying physiology (eg negative-priming effects in person perception seem very robust and have a clear and reasonably well understood mechanism).

We already knew subliminal marketing does not work. Should have logically followed that flashing pictures of saints most likely won't make people behave more morally.

Funnily enough I've never seen anyone bring this up. It's as if people never actually took it seriously because those studying it should have realized the implication for advertising immediately. If social priming worked, there would have been people making money.

but also low priors because there are people who have been trying to find exploits and bugs in the human psyche to make money for years - if criminals and con men aren't exploiting this priming business, it's probably because it doesn't do much...
