CBS News asked — who is campaigning in California during the Iowa Caucuses — about his feud with President Trump, and whether people want to see two billionaires fighting on Twitter. Bloomberg: "Two billionaires? Who's the second one?"

And, maybe another reason why philosophy seems impractical is its lack of hard answers. A useful reframing is thinking of reading moral philosophy like being a VC for moral ideas. It's hard to tell which ideas are gonna be succesful but nonetheless fruitful to engage w them.

My experience is that philosophical study bears the greatest fruits when connected to the practical realities of living. Reading about amoralism is a lot more fruitful when you think about an amoral friend, etc

Practically minded people often ask what the practical value of studying philosophy is. My experience is that it illuminates the significance of action which, in the speed of everyday life, can get lost. It's helped me challenge and develop my (still quite incomplete) worldview.

I've never read a work of philosophy and thought it beautiful until Scanlon's "What We Owe to Each Other." He asks, what is it about an action's being wrong that gives us reason not to do it? He answers, beautifully, that it is our inability to justify it to each other.

It's going to be pretty ironic if we all dedicate our careers to slowing aging and increasing human lifespan, but then we just die from a cut on our finger instead

More people die from diarrheal diseases than from violence. 1.35 million people died from ‘intentional injuries’ in 2017: (last available data) 800,000 Suicides 405,000 Homicides 130,000 Battle deaths 26,500 Terrorism Diarrheal diseases: 1.6 million

Other loan-types with high growth potential are fertilizer (increases yields by a lot) and drought-resistant seeds (same story as fertilizer, along with much less risk of a failed harvest). We're actively considering those, too.

This year, we are giving post-harvest loans of cash and storage bags based on research in Kenya () and Tanzania (). These loans help farmers sell their rainy season harvest later when prices are much higher.

The way we try to make an impact is by targeting. We focus exclusively on farmers who happen also to be the least off. And, we focus exclusively on lending products which have growth potential for our clients.

How do loans create increases in income? This is really complicated. The benefits of micro-credit are often overstated. As this article by indicates, microfinance, in the majority of cases, is far from a silver bullet.

Our goal is to sustainably (ie with a balanced budget) lend at a 10% real interest rate. Our goal is for loans to be targeted (ie when people need them most) so they create at least a 30% increase in household incomes.

The problem we are solving is that loans to the least off tend to be small and expensive to manage. As a consequence, most microfinance orgs either have 50-100% annualized interest rates or are donor-dependent. We think tech can go a long way to solve this.

Taimaka () uses tech to make it easier to lend to the poorest people in the world at low interest rates. So far, we have: - raised $12k - given low interest loans to 50 extremely poor households with 300 individuals in Nigeria - built software to scale
