Toiora being released on Whenua Hou yesterday. She's never been outside of a nest in the wild before after 276 days in hospital, so there's a whole new world to get used to. She was a little reluctant to leave her crate. Pic: Sarah Little.

It’s been very wet in southern New Zealand this week. Juvenile Toiora had a rather damp first night out in the wild last night. She should quickly learn to find shelter. Pic: Sarah Little. .

Lumley family heraldry includes “popinjays” (cf. papagei), as parrots were known in medieval times, based on Asian Psittacula or “ringneck” parakeets, but the feet are rendered incorrectly; parrots have zygodactyl feet (two toes forward and two back)

It's official! The most popular book we've digitised 4 is John Gould's 1837 "A synopsis of the birds of Australia & the adjacent Islands" from 's rare book collection (surely b/c of Elizabeth Gould's exquisite illustrations)

The deaths of 🐨 in SW Vic are awful, but please can the media stop interviewing the Australian Koala Foundation about this and pretty much anything. Instead, talk to the many koala scientific experts around Australia

Ridiculous. This is wanton, deliberate killing of protected wildlife, not comparable in any way! Careful studies of raptor deaths from wind turbines have found numbers to be low; feral cats and climate-related bushfires kill thousands of times more birds.

A what? A Grey Plover? What's that? I spent three years finding out, and it led me on an odyssey across the globe and into myself. Launch of my book 'Flight Lines' is this week in Hobart, next week in Melbourne. And here's the fleeting beauty. (Pic: Heather Alexander)
