Don't say "Parking Requirements" Instead use "Costly Parking Mandates" The language we use evokes emotion and mental short cuts; we like to create coherent stories. Framing the story of parking reform in a compelling way will help us succeed.

Don't Say: Parking Requirements
The word ā€œrequirementsā€ indicates something is required, implicitly that it is needed. It is also value-neutral.
Instead Use: Costly Parking Mandates
Remind people parking costs money and land to provide. And use the term ā€œmandatesā€ which implies a heavier hand.

Just talked to our members and partners in Austin, TX to congratulate them for the city council voting 10-1 to eliminate parking mandates citywide! There’s still work to be done to pass the implementation, but this is a momentous step forward.

This seems like a joke, but it’s actually the truth… A single parking space serves no purpose. It needs a partner at every possible destination. More parking leads to even more parking and ever wider, deadlier, and more expensive roads in between.

If I understand this correctly, #Montana is about to pass statewide parking reform. In cities & towns with > 7000 people, multiple-unit dwellings will once again be legal in all commercial zones. Parking mandates for these homes will be limited to no more than 1 space/home. /1

The "Montana Miracle" continues. Now both chambers of its legislature have passed: - SB 245, legalizing apartments & mixed-use in all commercial zones & limiting city parking mandates to 1 space per home - SB 528, legalizing 1,000 sq ft ADUs with no poison pills statewide.

Please please please let's STOP doing Predict-and-Provide parking studies like this one in Fayetteville. Building subsidized parking is the last thing downtowns need. There are dozens of downtown-enhancing strategies to try before we even consider boosting parking supply.

UPDATE: SEPTA is tabling this budget item! Thanks to everyone who spoke out and told SEPTA we shouldn't be spending transit dollars on auto-infrastructure!

SEPTA Board will be considering approving tens of millions of dollars on the Conshohocken parking garage tomorrow at 3PM. Here's the link to give public comments virtually. At the very least they should table this project until new budget is approved! septaorg.webex.com/webappng/sites

US cities can learn so much from cities abroad like Beijing. Cities don’t have parking supply problems, they have *parking management* problems!

Reinventing Parking this month is about Beijing's escape from a parking disaster. Folks from ITDP China (past and present) explained how Beijing has improved its parking situation compared with 10 years ago.
