Moby's argument isn't new, either. It's gotten a lot of traction in recent years https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/23/upshot/restrictions-on-food-stamp-purchases-can-improve-diets.html … http://www.sun-sentinel.com/opinion/commentary/sfl-food-stamp-recipients-should-have-limits-on-their-food-choices-20150410-story.html …http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/373507-trump-proposes-restricting-choices-for-food-stamp-recipients …

Anyway, the argument seems to hinge on this idea that people on food stamps just load up on junk food and we need to stop them for their own good or whatever. 1.) that's ridiculous. 2.) It's not even really accurate.https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/food-stamps-diet_us_582f4bd7e4b058ce7aaadea0 …

A better argument might be to call for substantial increases in SNAP funding, increasing the per-family amount, and seeing what happens from there. Given a larger budget, families on SNAP might gravitate towards healthier fresh foods. But restricting choice isn't the answer.

If you read this thread and came away thinking that my point was that "free markets" are great or that "it's good that poor people are more vulnerable to diabetes," you really, REALLY need to work on your reading comprehension skills. What a tool. @agentlesoundpic.twitter.com/Cznhj7E8Q6

It’s kind of funny that Moby’s op-ed about food stamps is basically this old Onion articlehttps://local.theonion.com/woman-a-leading-authority-on-what-shouldn-t-be-in-poor-1819576454 …

what about diapers, formula, baby food?

I actually wrote about diaper need (and how awful it is that there's not some sort of assistance program for it) last weekhttp://www.upworthy.com/an-mlb-star-s-scary-experience-with-his-newborn-helped-fuel-an-unexpected-cause-diapers?c=apstream …

Exactly. We keep demonizing those who have the least, and therefore the greatest need. The GOP has made careers off telling the right, that they should blame the poor for wasting our tax dollars, all while the GOP are giving the biggest tax breaks to their corporate donors.

Are healthy foods really more expensive?
-
One example: A bacon quarter-pounder at McDonald's costs more than a grilled chicken southwest salad.

Not sure how meaningful studies are in this context. https://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/pub-details/?pubid=44679 …pic.twitter.com/E1WjDlucuY

Where did he get the idea that fresh fruits and vegetables are "cheap"? Calorie for calorie, they're DAMN expensive.
-
Where are you shopping? Go to a store like Price Rite, you can get a head of lettuce for $1, two cukes for $1, other veggies similar priced. I can eat salads for lunch all week for less than $5. I'm sure there's someplace in your area too.
-
A head of lettuce, cucumbers, and other veggies have very few calories,. Particularly for people who do manual labor all day, it's not reasonable to expect them to subsist on salad. If you're doing hard work all day, you need a way to pack in large amounts of calories for cheap.
-
Aunt Beast, first you're claiming fruits and veggies are too expensive; then when I explain they're not, you like a tweet about how they won't sustain you all day. Seems like you simply don't want healthy food and are looking for reasons as to why you "can't".
-
No, you're not understanding what is being said. Produce is expensive because of the amount needed to provide significant calories. It's also expensive because it spoils fast, requires regular trips to the grocery store, which poor people might not be able to manage.
-
Some can't, perhaps...but many can. And if they aren't getting enough calories from it, they can either add protein to a salad, or just have a little veg alongside some chicken, etc. My point is that there are definitely ways for most people. But they have to try.
-
I'm disabled...I can't manage frequent trips to the store either, nor do I feel well enough to cook elaborate things. So I definitely get it. But I also know it's largely possible.
