I haven't read the book so I'm not sure on the details of that... Relying on emergent sexual selection might be better than a state enforced program though, which would have administrative costs and a lot of cultural downsides

normative monogamy evolved in a Malthusian world where the poor were constantly going extinct, a la farewell to alms. also male death rate was much higher, etc. lots of things ensured selection could still occur

unclear what the effects would be in a nonmalthusian world. ultimately this is putting th cart before the horse though because modes of subsistence acquisition determine the macro dynamics of mating behavior
