What if I spelled it (((Spinoza)))?

-
Well yes, I wondered if there was something more than that
-
Think the God stuff also is (a bigger) problem.
-
For the Catholic right? Secular righties shouldn't have a problem with that from my perspective and I think in general there's a large gulf between ideas about god and political conclusions
-
Agreed. Some people are just weird.

Spinoza was a fascist who provided the basis of Herder’s vitalistic, rascist cultural nationalism. True R/ACC embraces him
-
I always knew he was a good lad

One reason is Spinoza was the first to do historical biblical criticism. By calling the Bible a historical document he was immediately considered a heretic. Hence anathema to most right wing figures. See the Jacobi controversy concerning Spinoza.
-
Good point though regarding contemporary discussion people should have come to terms with that by now
-
Leo Strauss makes the case that Spinoza, far from "the last of the medievals," was one of the first moderns. Ancient pol-phil saw political communities as engines for human flourishing, but moderns are less optimistic about our natural goodness so they assume we're all selfish
-
…unfortunately his remarks on Spinoza are few and awfully cryptic. Whether or not he agreed with Spinoza philosophically, his categorization of him as a "modern" has probably convinced many US trad-leaning theorists that Spinoza's insights are limited (Strauss preferred Plato)

It's saying Spinoza's non-dualism leads to a kind of anti-nomianism that helped pave the way for Nazism?

My guess would be Negri.

Not to mention Althusser, Balibar, Macherey...
-
Spinoza can rightly be blamed for enabling people to write about him in Romance languages.

tbf Spinoza has been also vindicated by a bunch of right wing thinkers (just think of Scruton). I don't think the God stuff is the main issue. it probably has to do with the fact that with a Spinozist epistemology there is no prejudice left spared, including the theistic ones.

I guess because the right often depends on dualism
