It's true, most religious people aren't biblical literalists - and that's why Christianity is so pozzedhttps://twitter.com/Sutalffa/status/986078976782290944 …

Exactly. He's not realizing the point of literal interpretation is to impress irrational people so they respect others. There are deeper meanings in scripture that rational people appreciate.
-
It seems fairly obvious to me that neither of you really understand what the term "literal" actually means. As a result, you're both basically making bottom-tier observations
-
You appear to believe that the term "literal" is essentially a synonym for the term "prosaic," which is not really the case. Any deeper spiritual meanings in the scripture nevertheless have to be derived from taking the text within its various contexts
-
If one doesn't do that then one really is just sort of making it up as they go along, which is a bottom-tier hermeneutic. The trick is understanding that when said deeper meanings are intended by scripture, scripture makes that obvious
-
The problem with the hyper-allegorical appriach is that it often fantasizes "spiritual" meanings which are nowhere indicated in the text and which often contradict other portions of scripture, which automatically makes these allegories irrelevant
-
Much of allegoryization really is postmodern in its spirit - it was post-modernism before post-modernism had that term applied to it. Honestly, Origen and Clement of Alexandria were the two worst things to happen to 2nd and 3rd century Christianity
