The reason why this is national news is *because* engineering is so safe and there is such redundancy built into every design. Innovation does not equal risk.

Certainly not but one doesn't innovate in building bridges without accepting a (hopefully seriously modest) prospect of risk.

There is arguably more risk in building a bridge piece by piece over an active roadway. There is also risk in detouring traffic onto smaller and unfamiliar roads.
