City-states don't allow the effective transfer of labor & capital without federation. None can prosper absent specialized niches, & there aren't enough to go around. Also, city-states can be crushed militarily by nation-states.

I understand that and that's why for the USA I advocate for extreme devolution of powers to the States but not abolishing the union as such.

Given that people broadly support progressive govt policies & the inherent destructiveness of many conservative policies, I don't see it ending well. Look how many federal dollars Red State America consumes.

No. People will starve. Quibble about Kathryn Edin's estimates, but many people going hungry in America. Some won't adapt. Some can't adapt. I don't even give a shit if some are lazy.

Even if it were true that people could starve it might be better to look at other paths now, given that the US govt like other liberal democracies seems incapable of managing it's debt it won't be able to pick up the cheque forever
