... AlphaZero: "I guess Deep Blue wasn't totally shit at what the monkeys used to call 'chess'." -- Applies to Blue stuff in general.

AlphaZero kicked the ass of the chess program that pawned Deep Blue, that humiliated Kasparov. It learnt to do that -- without human advice -- in four hours. (Via Hariri.)

... Take toast, then torch it into charcoal, then throw the burnt dust into an experimental fusion reactor. That's formalizable human strategic competence in the current epoch.

But the formalization makes all the difference. A good definition of whatever consciousness is, is intelligence that can still do *something*, however incompetent, without knowing the rules.

Moldbug's reservationist epistemology: All logic reduces to intuition, which itself cannot be formalized except by further logic, which is itself intuition. Or rather, nobody has figured out how to formalize consciousness/intuition. When they do, it'll be game over for monkeys.

But until then, AIs are narrow automata. Shouldn't impress one any more than number-crunching. Forget chess, when an AI can tie a shoelace it'll be a genuine advance. (Not my insights, Jim's.)

I think an AI that can tie shoelaces could be built now though, but no one is funding that

An AI that can tie one particular shoelace, from one particular angle, etc. could be built. An AI that can tie a shoelace, wash a window, fold a shirt and make lasagna would be hugely profitable, but is not funded because impossible with current tech. Need AConsciousness, not AI.

Sure. But the difference between what my maid means when she says she can tie a shoelace, and what a team of overworked 150IQ engineers mean when they say their robot can 'tie a shoelace', is exactly what I'm trying to communicate here.
