The problem with Soto is the "practice is enlightenment" thing. Yes, the mental states may be approximate but without authentic satori it lacks the a certain dimension of "being in your bones" or self consciousness and is instead a kind of well intentioned performative.

Some people however, do attain satori from intense meditation so ofc it's not without value. But for someone with my composition I had to be abused by the koan process for a decade before it sunk in haha

That's a strong period of practice, I started sitting about 8 years ago but I had more free time back then, practising has suffered a bit more recently from work and other commitments sadly
