they're not intended as ends in themselves though, the end is to stop you from going to hell and, hopefully, achieve sth better ("I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee") it's really on the penitent to make anything of it

as far as sin goes, if you're handed down an ideal from above then it certainly makes sense as a shortfall from that ideal, I don't think there's anything internally inconsistent in it
