    Pangolins are poached at record breaking numbers because of the use for their scales in traditional Chinese medicine. However, Western medicine has not found any evidence that their scales have any physiological effect on humans.

    Pangolins have a thick layer of protective scales made from keratin, the same material that makes up human fingernails and rhinoceros horns. When threatened, pangolins curl into a ball, using the scales as armor to defend themselves.
