Enterprise software can be a seriously hard business when incumbent platform companies figure out how to synthesize features & improve their offerings. Nice piece in the interview with Stewart Butterfield of Slack about competing with Microsoft Teams

Everytime I watch speak, I learn something new. This time summit: Wirth's law, on computer performance - 'software is getting slower more rapidly than hardware is becoming faster.' 😊 Why you should be optimistic about the future:

One reading of Costco's Annual reports will explain you why theoretical concepts of investing rarely work in the practical world of business. The company talks about taking hit on margins in the short term for long term gain and explains how. Source: Costco AR 2012

The LIC act provides for 90% of profits to be transferred to policy holders. The policy holders rely on this for their bonus etc (LIC distributes 95%). ie LIC is a Mutual company or cooperative. This is very different from structure of private insurers.

A top down overly simplistic approach like this is probably the worst way to invest. The left column for lack of a better word is talk / intent. Execution is a whole different ball game

'History shows that the way innovators make ideas into practical and affordable products or processes is trial and error. Edison understood that, as does Jeff Bezos, who made plenty of mistakes on his way to huge success.' Matt Riddley

Hard work is the engine. Strategy is the GPS. It’s difficult to get anywhere without hard work. If the engine stops running, progress stalls. But you’ll waste a lot of gas without a good strategy. It’s easier to make progress when you’re following the optimal path.

I started tracking Marico recently. While the Q3FY21 results are dull, the management's deep-dive, data-driven analysis of the results and the medium term strategy is PHENOMENAL! Do give it a read. I wish every company could do this.
