Long time no see, Twitter. I'm looking for an article I read long ago. It discussed (& had solutions to) using four numbers (not just 4's) and any operations to create from 1 to 30 (or more?). Details are a bit fuzzy. Help? #mtbos #thinkingclassroom

My son in elementary school was asked the question.
What contributions did Indigenous people offer to settlers?
I think the question was meant to be present tense - not past tense...
We are still here.
We still contribute.

I also worry that without spaces to explore these issues in earnest, some students are pushed further into stereotypical perceptions of model minorities & proximity to whiteness - only for students to subsequently realize that there's no seat at that table either #MisEducAsian

Hey #OntEd, Ramadan begins next week & it looks like we're in a similar situation to last year – new wave, potentially learning from home.
This thread from Ramadan 2020 is (sadly) still relevant.
Hope you have a safe, uneventful week before the break.

A fascinating consideration about representation of data here: besides context and content, I hadn't seen a better example where timing also plays a factor. #MTBoS and #IteachMath how might you explore this in class? Or is it better suited for media studies? cc

1/A thread about anti-Black racism & anti-Asian racism: I get asked to comment on this a lot--esp. in the last few weeks with viral videos showing Black ppl attacking Asians. And I always say things are more complicated than the standard narrative of tensions and conflicts

A5: I think a powerful result of this framework is that there continues to be new challenges for the teacher to grow alongside students. The more you integrate, the more interesting challenges arise. #thinkingclassroom

Honestly, there should exist no barriers if we can't get to the basic human rights of being able to experience mathematics
(or classrooms, for the matter) in a humane way, where students feel heard and valued. 2/3 #thinkingclassroom

A4: definitely crucial. not even just giving up 3 - 5 classes... depending on potential traumas that students have experienced before, it may take more than 3 - 5 classes to really build up trust & a positive relationship (not to mention positive culture). 1/? #thinkingclassroom

Q4: How do you feel about giving up the first 3-5 classes to noncurricular tasks?
What are the barriers for you to do this?
What do you stand to gain? What do you stand to lose?

As for tasks I've worked with in my teaching so far... Years ago, I was working more with spiraling tasks that relate naturally to curricula. Then I began to focus and explicitly integrate the "soft skills" like problem solving, reasoning 4/? #thinkingclassroom

& then once we have built a positive culture where my students are open to risk taking alongside each other -in other words a brave and safe space for learning, imagining, and for collaborating - we work on tasks that are more "curricular (through spirals)" 3/? #thinkingclassroom

This, in turn, robs students of ownership, wonder, as well as the opportunity to invest themselves into the problems and to see that they can do it - it makes them into unhappy photocopiers at best. #thinkingclassroom

A2. So many things here, I think. First, it's part of the believed "path-to-success" to mimic/conform with existing institutional norms (& of course, reinforcing many unhelpful beliefs about ourselves, about each other, & about mathematics along the way). 1/? #thinkingclassroom

Q2: Almost all students who “mimic” express that they thought this is what they were meant to be doing.
In what ways do we as teachers communicate that mimicking is what we want students to do — even if that is not what we want?
