I also worry that without spaces to explore these issues in earnest, some students are pushed further into stereotypical perceptions of model minorities & proximity to whiteness - only for students to subsequently realize that there's no seat at that table either #MisEducAsian

Hey #OntEd, Ramadan begins next week & it looks like we're in a similar situation to last year – new wave, potentially learning from home. This thread from Ramadan 2020 is (sadly) still relevant. Hope you have a safe, uneventful week before the break.

Ramadan begins at the end of this week. For K-12 educators looking for ways to support Muslim students, check out @muslimteach’s article 👇🏿teachingwhilemuslim.org/teacher-blog/2 I asked a few Muslim students, parents and educators what they want teachers to know. Some themes... #RamadanEd

I fall into the trap of mainly discussing Muslim students through the lens of accomodations, it's something we have to grow past. I want us to care for and tend to Muslim students the way we should for all, and I want us to talk about them like we see their humanity.

A fascinating consideration about representation of data here: besides context and content, I hadn't seen a better example where timing also plays a factor. #MTBoS and #IteachMath how might you explore this in class? Or is it better suited for media studies? cc

In the past 2 hrs (keep in mind ministers have been cabinet meeting entire time) @OntarioPCParty caucus including Premier Ford & Ministers have been tweeting strangely similar looking info! Could this be a blame shift to feds Re: further restrictions coming? 🧐 #Onpoli

A 911 call led Ottawa police enter wrong home while responding to a distress call about a potentially suicidal man. They entered the Ngoto home before dawn and left the family shaken. More context in this thread

A5: I think a powerful result of this framework is that there continues to be new challenges for the teacher to grow alongside students. The more you integrate, the more interesting challenges arise. #thinkingclassroom

#ThinkingClassroom Q5: What are some of the challenges you anticipate you will experience in implementing the types of tasks described in this chapter? What are some ways to overcome these?

A4: definitely crucial. not even just giving up 3 - 5 classes... depending on potential traumas that students have experienced before, it may take more than 3 - 5 classes to really build up trust & a positive relationship (not to mention positive culture). 1/? #thinkingclassroom

#ThinkingClassroom Q4: How do you feel about giving up the first 3-5 classes to noncurricular tasks? What are the barriers for you to do this? What do you stand to gain? What do you stand to lose?

& then once we have built a positive culture where my students are open to risk taking alongside each other -in other words a brave and safe space for learning, imagining, and for collaborating - we work on tasks that are more "curricular (through spirals)" 3/? #thinkingclassroom

A3: With a particular class, I begin with problems that encourage collaboration, have diverse strategies, & that has opportunities for me to celebrate specific student achievements (e.g. those who have not had positive experiences w/ mathematics) 2/? #thinkingclassroom

Specifically, the I do, you do (maybe stick a we do in there somewhere) prevents students from thinking about the issue/problem/context/activity for themselves - since they already have the completely-correct-and-no-other-alternatives way to do the problem. 2/? #thinkingclassroom

A2. So many things here, I think. First, it's part of the believed "path-to-success" to mimic/conform with existing institutional norms (& of course, reinforcing many unhelpful beliefs about ourselves, about each other, & about mathematics along the way). 1/? #thinkingclassroom
Quote Tweet
#ThinkingClassroom Q2: Almost all students who “mimic” express that they thought this is what they were meant to be doing. In what ways do we as teachers communicate that mimicking is what we want students to do — even if that is not what we want?

A1. I teach secondary students by involving mathematics. I am in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I have integrated all elements of the thinking classroom in my practices, and continue to push on the edges to enrich my students' learning as well as my own learning. #ThinkingClassroom

#ThinkingClassroom Q1: Introduce yourself: - what do you teach? - where do you teach? - do you use any Thinking Classroom practices in your classroom?
