So if someone believes in Christ but goes and kills dozens of people they're still saved by virtue of believing in Christ? By what standard does someone adequately "believe" in Christ?

The answer to your scenario is yes Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Only you and God can truly know what you believe in your heart.

I'll not saying any of us "know" if we will be saved or not but we can have an idea as to whether or not our actions contradict our faith. What do you think of the 10 commandments?

If you believe Jesus is Lord and was raised on the third day and speak it aloud you will be saved. Everyone knows what they do believe and don’t believe. If salvation was based on the 10 commandments then neither Peter nor Paul would be saved. What do you think of Romans 10?

You don't understand that I'm not saying it's one or the other. It's both. You need faith to act by God's law but you can violate God's law by not sufficiently meeting God's lofty expectations of us. Verbally saying "Jesus!" won't absolve you of wrongdoing

Why do you disagree with The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Again, by what standard do we determine "belief"? Are we able to commit sin?
