If you Like, Retweet or reply to this, you're creating data about us that others are determined to exploit. If you don't, you're choosing not to share this uncomfortable fact about social media. What can we do?

More generally, I think, the genome encode a lot of this wiring in a statistical sense, with rules, such that the outcome varies. Letting activity refine these circuits may be a general quality control mechanism for well-made synapses or a means of ensuring matching

Do I follow anyone who radically changed discipline during their academic career? I dont mean from like... inorganic chemistry to materials, or maths to theoretical physics, but like from physics to philosophy or something similar.

Maybe we can find 4 or 5 commands that any AI/robot should be required to respond with (identify, authorization, etc), and do so without "adding character." Standard "about" information.

*noting that robots and AIs are simulations of (bits of) life and intelligence. Unless these simulations are treated as scientific instruments any claimed new insights into the nature of intelligence should be regarded with deep suspicion. 2/2

Computer simulations are rarely if ever designed and used as scientific instruments, which means that we learn little or nothing from them*. Check our book Engineering Simulations as Scientific Instruments, reviewed here 1/2

My knee-jerk reaction? Continental philosophers are interested in everday experience while analytic philosophers are interested in abstractions from everyday experience. Or, better put, particulars vs. universals.

The most "annoying" thing about Analytic Philosophers is that no matter the question, no matter what the concern...they will have a "thought experiment" designed to illustrate something about it. And (contrary to popular opinion) these do not always involve trolleys.

The most "annoying" thing about Continental Philosophers is that no matter what the question, no matter what the concern....they will point you to something to read. And it will usually come packaged in French or German. This is (contrary to popular opinion) a good thing.

True at first glance, some involve violinists, Russian nobleman, invisible gardeners, radio repair men, asses, lecherous millionaires or barbers. But ultimately it's like food and sandwiches: They all can get improved when put on a trolley and made to have a fatal accident.

Maybe the most enjoyable philosophy book I own. I can just pick it up and read at random. Chomsky, Fodor (on fire), Piaget, Putnam (on fire), Bateson, Jacques Monod (hero), Francois Jacob, Piatelli-Palmarini (keeping things orderly). Just an amazing record.
