For our mash-up, here's a burrowing HORNED rodent, Ceratogaulus hatcheri. It lived ~6 MYA in Kansas and belongs to a group of rodents that includes squirrels and groundhogs. Its closest *living* relative is the mountain beaver Aplodontia rufa.

Quite possibly the fattest echidna we have ever seen!! 😝 This fine lady was clipped by a car, but luckily only had a couple of minor bruises! She has now been released 🙂 How gorgeous is she?! 😍 (She is sedated in this photo by the way!)

TIL that featured in a postage stamp series issued in the Malvdives, and I am here for it. 📮 They are in very good company alongside fellow A-list megafauna Megatherium and Arsinotherium (take that, Mammoths!)

There were less than 400 Kangaroo Island glossy black cockatoos alive before the fires started, and almost half of has now burned. 25 years of painstaking conservation efforts have just gone up in smoke. , and we are not the only ones paying for it.

Incredibly interesting thread following a necropsy of a stranded giant leatherback turtle. Belly-up, reflecting the plastron shows the extensive pectorals used for flapping their flippers during underwater flight! Such fascinating !

Happy folks! Here's a northern hairy-nose meeting a very big cousin. Exams killed Inktober but procrastination brought it back, as a wise old friend ((me from last year)) once said
