Here’s a robust psychological effect that does not wilt under replication scrutiny. Kurt Lewin noticed it in the 1930s: making public commitments “freezes” attitudes in place. So saying something dumb makes you a bit dumber. It becomes harder to correct yourself. Tweeters beware.pic.twitter.com/cXoujA4VUY

That’s why, when you serve on a jury, the judge tells you not to discuss anything about the case with people at home. In my experience on a jury, you keep changing your mind every day, and if you tell no one you don’t have to feel trapped by what you said

We can counteract this. I praise people for entertaining fact based & divergent views & taking wiser positions. I take pride in & boast of admitting my mistakes. Born in the Republican right, I now support #BernieWarren2020 #MMT #GreenNewDeal #JobGuarantee #M4A #NetNeutrality

We can even see about getting people to declare in writing, “I’m willing to listen open-mindedly to differing ideas.”

On the other hand, if you never express opinions you hold, you can't error check them, nor can you convince others to hold them.
