No matter what level of engagement with China one supports (which is a legitimate, important, and ongoing debate), no intellectual position is defensible if it doesn't squarely address the human rights atrocities in Xinjiang.

So many stand-out details in this piece, but I cannot get over the account of the sympathetic Han official who was purged and used as a warning to others. It means something that people tried to stop this. And that they were crushed.

The new guidelines on countering foreign interference at universities couldn't have come soon enough. If universities wish to avoid an overbearing government response, institutions like the University of Queensland should ensure strict compliance from the outset.

If this is true, that the BRITs are going to give full citizenship to Hong Kong BNO passport holders, US needs to get on the stick. 25,000 Hong Kongers per year in the United States is an economic boom. We should not let fat ass beat us in attracting HK talent.
