Head of Immunisation for @PHE_uk -Dr Ramsey announced to the Science & Technology Committee that England may follow a focused protection strategy, where protection is given to the vulnerable and the disease is allowed to circulate among the young where its not causing much harm.pic.twitter.com/WuRZLRXOpT

It is false to claim we support herd immunity as a way to combat the #COVID19 pandemic. Please see a response from Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation at PHE:pic.twitter.com/Q3dmg2Jlfu

Quote from Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation at Public Health England:

'It is false to claim that PHE supports herd immunity from COVID-19 infection as a way out of the pandemic.

Vaccines are critical to our COVID-19 response and it is right that we prioritise those most at risk of severe illness and death first.

We do not yet know whether vaccines prevent transmission of this virus and that is why it is critical that everyone continues to socially distance and practises good hand and respiratory hygiene, following the principles of Hands, Face, Space.

Everyone needs to do this, regardless of whether they have had the vaccine or not.'

Right, so we're stuck in a pandemic forever. Just brilliant!

They prevent disease by circa 95%, and they do prevent infection (not sure of exact %). It's good ethical practice to state that if someone gets the virus after having the vaccine, it's not known if said people can still transmit the virus.

What an absolutely weird and seemingly irrelevant interjecting from @PHE_uk. They’re worried people will stop living in fear and act like normal human beings probably.

So you don't support what the WHO recommends? Good to know, thank you. "WHO supports achieving 'herd immunity' through vaccination"
