The identification of House, Purple and Cassin's Finch can be tricky-especially females! Each species is about the same size+shape, and each is a common visitor within its range. This cutie-a female House Finch is a regular at my feeders For ID tips-visit

-We want your “boring” counts! These predictable counts are the heart of FeederWatch. Focusing on the extreme cases would provide a biased view of bird populations. Scientists need counts of all birds—as well as reports of no birds—to monitor trends over time

Very quiet at my feeders this week. Very little snow and lots of natural food available. Most consistent species for me each week on - House Finches! What’s your most consistent species?

What’s black and white and red all over? Well, if you happen to be in 's Manitouwadge backyard, it would be a Hairy Woodpecker and a male Pine Grosbeak enjoying her generosity. Thanks Tammie!

Sometimes rare/unusual feeder birds show up on a count day and we are as excited as the participants about these sightings! Loved this photo of a Hermit Thrush, Kelly Patterson McGrath, Barrie, ON

Who displaces who at your feeders? This surprisingly feisty House Finch did not like sharing my peanut feeder with the White-breasted Nuthatch!

Just 2% of the FeederWatch sites in British Columbia are lucky enough to host Red-breasted Sapsuckers. They typically winter in forested habitats. Thanks to Bob Sebel for this great photo. Gorgeous bird!

DYK that fruit makes up 90% of the American Robin's diet in fall and winter. To help Robins in winter, plant native fruit-bearing plants like crabapples and dogwood and please count birds attracted to fruits or ornamental plantings on . Great photo from Eileen McVey

Suet feeder is a great part of our bird feeding station. Delicious fat packed with calories for downy & hairy woodpeckers, red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatches, chickadees and even an occasional flicker in our neighbourhood
