Doesn't really matter to me, I'm not affected...but, I believe the channels that track subs have caused a bit of a problem. IMHO James wouldn't have lost so many subscribers if there weren't like ten channels tracking his subscriber count, and benefiting over it.

Most creators use socialblade as a 3rd party audit of their channel. Accuracy of these numbers are important. Live sub counts are also streamed by users when they are reaching new milestones to celebrate. It's usually not used for drama. Just when it is, the streams blow up.
