Baroness Williams of Crosbie was MP for three different constituencies. She served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection from 1974 to 1976 and Secretary of State for Education and Science and Paymaster General from 1976 to 1979.

Wow. Very soon after I moved to join my family in Wakefield, my Mum’s teaching colleague invited me to a speech she was giving in the area. Passionate but not overly so, forthright but not aggressive, direct and aware of others views/opinions. I came away and impressed 20 yr old.

Old enough to remember her winning the Crosby by-election in 1981, and opening her acceptance speech with a quotation from the Secular Masque by John DRYDEN, “’Tis well an old age is out, And time to begin a new”. (It is perhaps unfortunate that these lines are spoken by Janus.)
