    A 5-year overhaul of Pennsylvania’s statewide radio network is going according to plan, says. The old system was expensive, and its coverage was so spotty that police and other first responders couldn’t rely on it for communication.

  8. My audit focused on the purchasing process for the new radio system. Overall, State Police and the Office of Administration did follow all the procurement rules. But there’s always room for improvement. My report includes three findings and makes ten recommendations.

  10. I’m happy to say that the new radio system should remedy all those problems when it’s fully operational in summer 2021. The new system—which cost $44.5 million—should pay for itself fairly quickly. State Police will be able to reuse towers/microwave relays from the old system.

  12. As you may recall, the new P-25 radio system replaces a problematic radio system that dated back to 1996. That old system ended up costing taxpayers over $850 million, or more than 4.5 times what it was originally projected to cost.
