The decision was announced after Trump spoke by phone to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A White House statement said the two leaders agreed, regarding Syria, to "continue coordinating on the creation of a potential safe zone".
Mr. Trump’s decision to keep some U.S. forces in Syria could pave the way for France and the U.K. to follow suit.
On Friday, Turkish officials are to meet in Washington with acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan and Gen. Joe Dunford, Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to discuss the withdrawal.
