I'm very pro gun control, but I'm also pro-fact, and there's a massive shortage of facts on this subject.

Silencers, as we know them from movies and video games, are not real. They do not exist. There is no device that makes a gun quiet.

What does exist is the sound suppressor, a device that makes a gun about as quiet as a jackhammer or a rock concert.

The purpose of this device is to keep the noise level of the gun just barely low enough that it doesn't damage your ears.

It does this by containing some of the bullet's explosion, which, yes, does reduce muzzle flash.

The vast majority of guns cannot mount a sound suppressor because they do not have extended, threaded barrels to screw onto.

Knowing all this, it's hard for me to imagine a benefit to banning sound suppressors beyond sticking it to the GI Joe wannabes.

(But if that's your thing, you know, knock yourself out.)
