Here is a graph of the monthly count of daily air-quality exceedances (24 hour mean PM2.5 >25) at Liverpool since 2000 when Government monitoring began. November 2019 had almost twice as many as any previous month.

Today and I took another 20 volunteers to survey wildlife in Jerrawangala NP south of Nowra. In 3 hours we saw 65 lizards, one frog (Crinia signifera) and lots of signs of wombats and kanagaroos using the burnt area.

Surveyed fauna in fire affected Buxton NSW today with 28 wonderful volunteers from . We surveyed 34 km of road and found dozens of healthy lizards, including this Blue-tongue (). Also signs of active wombats and kangaroos, and only one dead kangaroo.

Because fuels don't build up forever after fire (see insert graph), the average amount of fuel consumed varies according to inter-fire interval (see red line). Burning all NSW forests every 5 years may triple particulate pollution.

35 of my field sites where I measured veg structure earlier this year have now burnt in Yengo NP. So we have an existing baseline to study the impact of this fire. Hopefully this will help us better understand fire behaviour in these ecosystems.

The current NSW bushfires have produced particulate smoke equivalent to 51 billion cigarettes. 5 milligrams in a cigarette; 256 kg per hectare of bushfire; 1 m ha of fire.

It is a similar story at the temporary DPIE monitor at Port Macquarie: Hazardous levels. It has been bad for days. No information for the towns further north. 2/2

With bushfires raging across northern NSW, there is little capacity to monitor the impacts of the smoke. We deployed a low cost monitor to Taree for one day and found high and variable particulate concentrations, which seemed to occur when the wind died down. 1/2

The recent smoke event around much of NSW was the worst since the Christmas fires of 2001. This graph shows all daily particulate air quality exceedances for Wollongong since records began. The y axis is the sum of the daily PM for all the days in the event.

I led the first University of Wollongong tree planting day today. 11 wonderful people helped on a Bush Connect project near Berry NSW. We are growing habitat, connectivity and carbon! Thanks everyone, especially UOW Unilife.

Tim, the colours represent each classified individual tree done automatically by the software. No species information. On closer inspection, the software makes mistakes, e.g. classifying two touching trees as the same one. Still, it looks good.

We at the have been doing lots of Terrestrial Laser Scans before and after prescribed fires to measure the change in vegetation structure. Here is a good example of the point cloud data. It's great, but we need to turn it into numbers!

Helped NSW Government biodiversity scientists set up kangaroo exclusion plots in the Warrumbungles NP this week. What a place. What a project. What an efficient team!
