Well okay. A tart is a tiny pie, about 2.5 inches across, often filled with fruit or custard. A Nanaimo bar is a square dainty - rather like the above Butter Tart Pretenders - with a dense base of cocoa, butter, Graham cracker crumbs and shredded coconut.

The middle layer is thick custard mixed with a lot of icing sugar for a fairly solid, sweet vanilla component. Finally, chill the custard layer and melt semisweet or dark chocolate. Temper the chocolate slightly and pour over top for a thin, crackly layer of bitter chocolate.
