Since October we’ve received over 20,000 appeals from Facebook and Instagram users. We can’t consider all, so have selected cases that raise important questions about public discourse and Facebook’s policies, and potentially impact many users around the world.

The Oversight Board wasn’t created to solve every problem with Facebook, but the selection of our first cases is an important step towards establishing a critical independent check on the company’s approach to content moderation and empowering users.

We’ve also announced five new trustees. Trustees are responsible for safeguarding the independence of the Board and for ensuring that the Board operates effectively in fulfilling its stated purpose.
