Yeah, @nihilkoopit is right. The arrow of time is produced by the passive synthesis of Habit, it's secondary to time itself (which can never end).

(It's Kantian insofar as that split exists, and because Habit produces three active syntheses which echo the Kantian syntheses of the Imagination: Recognition, Recollection, Anticipation—generating time's arrow.)

This doesn't mean innovation exhausts itself, however: it just exhausts succession.

how is there innovation after heat death?

If innovation is synonymous with time production, it's not bound to a linear explication of time.

on the other hand, if it's bound to energy or information transfer, it's bound to end. but yeah, time encompasses any such events.

Really curious to know more about how this (basically Kantian) schema relates to

I wanna see his answer, but I think so. the hash function depends on energy transfers (and Ed's point aside, heat death is when all energy is equally distributed across space)

Even assuming we've got the basic plot, cosmic entropy max. is trillions of years out. It's hard to see how it's a human problem.

Is cosmic entropy transcendental, then? (Or am I getting something really badly confused? (Which is very likely—this naturally does my head in.))

From my very paltry understanding, (extreme) initial cosmic negative entropy is the great cosmo-physics head-scratcher. ...
