One was the creation of aphorisms, as stated by a commenter above. I would use different criteria, myself, hence, the proffering of Klein's name to the list. She's very influential, quoted often, and has written well on a wide variety of relevant topics: climate, politics, econ.

Influence, quotability, variety, respectability are not at all the underlying aspects of the list above. Nick can correct me if I'm wrong, but please--think harder about what actually generated that list.

Technology? That's hardly the only intellectual pursuit with relevance to society.

Nope. Here's a hint: you probably should worry if anyone you in particular admire was on that list. What makes an intellectual important rather than influential?

Clearly you and I don't run on the same rails, so why don't you just quit beating around the bush and state your point? (And "relevance" means importance- that's why I used the word in addition to "influential.")

They are all people who either radically changed the world in terms of _measurable shift in global tech development/resource_ or committed the great crime of being High Magistrates of Noticing.

Without Elon Musk, there are certain shifts that just don't happen. Same with Nakamoto, Thiel. The other three Noticed things.

(though with respect to both Nick and Sailer I think I'd rank Murray higher on the list)

My list might be reasonably accused of anti- cocktail circuit bias. I'd defend that as a probabilistic indicator of long-term influence.

I think TBC has the same staying power as Burnham with a higher profile. It's still the bible of noticing imo.

Bonus points for martyrdom, but less so for raw courage. Greg Cochran, for e.g., puts himself out there far more recklessly.
