This definition is nice and crunchy but it writes (classical) liberalism out of modern history, which strikes me as odd (even pathological).

are different. In the 19th century you had upstart bourgeois on the left and the landowners on the right.

In modern liberalism the configuration is different. Bourgeois are largely on the right and the welfare cases are on the left.
