this might be better interpreted as democracy being a fragile and hazy power sharing equilibrium rather than religious wars being the exceptions to norms of democracy.

if both sides can be convinced at the same time that their odds at "winning" democracy are 50%+, while knowing the other side is similarly convinced and knowing that the math doesn't add up, democracy begins.

uuuh, that is an Interesting interpretation of what happened in Spain. I'm not sure a Left coalition winning an election, so a right wing coup attempt starts a civil war really counts as "both sides ceased to believe in democracy"
-
also the thrust of this article seems to be "trumpists call themselves emotional and motivated by resentment, and that's what we often call leftists we don't like, so they are the same" which is... not super airtight, as an argument.

Still relevant in Spain when you look at Catalonia ,,;(Both sides stopped believing in democracy because it's too powerful of a tool for the enemy,,;)pic.twitter.com/680lIlDWlZ

Spain wasn’t having its population replaced by foreigners as a scheme to ensure political dominance by one faction forever. Nothing in common.

America is more like Spain in the 700s: Foreign Moslem invasion conquers country and replaces government, enslaves people. Not perfect, but a closer case than 1930s.

We might need to account for neoliberalism spoiling democracy post-WWII and rolling back democracy throughout the 80s and into the 00's, then postponing the 08 Recession with QE. IMO.
