The thing is, unlike Nolan’s films, this is actually left-of-center. If not fully sympathetic with the Joker’s excesses, it seems to argue a moderate socialism would have been needed to prevent them. Thomas Wayne is the most fully villainous character.

Counter-point: It's not hysteria. This movie is message fic, good message fic, and therefore dangerous. As art imitiating life, it serves as a warning, likely to deaf ears. All the Cathedral understands is that it must be kept out of the right hands, or plans crash and burn.
