Doesn’t seem very arbitrary given how little human intelligence is applied to advancing human intelligence.

Human intelligence was selected for in reaction of a want to avoid death. It’s a by-product of survival contingencies. The more difficult survival is for humans, the more intelligence is selected for. Thereby, if we wish to create smarter humans (AI), survival must be difficult.
