(2/2) One answer is stronger than others: A Protestant religious/cultural heritage. In none of these nations except Singapore and Switzerland has there been a majority religion other than Protestantism over the last few centuries. (Ranking source: Transparency International.)

... Large countries tend to be corrupt empires. Which isn't at all to suggest the ethnic factor can be neglected.
