At the time of Singapore's independence, Malays were roughly 40% of Malaysia's population, the Chinese close to that and the remainder were Indians and Borneo tribesmen. It wasn't a cakewalk for the Malays, and the Brits were a huge factor.

Malays were a minority in the Malay Peninsula. Even today, after decades of emigration & horrible demographics, Chinese would be 30% of Malaysia's population if Singapore returned to the federation
