To break it down a little: do you think there is anything to explain in the movement of the bounds of acceptable political discourse leftward in the last century+? In the expansion of the bureaucratic state? Is either phenomena linked to the multiplication of veto points?

Yes, yes, yes, but the long demotic tide (based on the rifleman-citizen) has its limits, and they're far more tightly bounded than those of Cthulhu-Capital.
