Without wanting to disrespect coldness, seasonal variation might be expected to generate higher selective pressure in the direction of intelligence, and especially extended time-horizons. ...

Interestingly, this is actually where some think Zodiac signs originated. Babies being born in different seasons develop differently and it was - especially in agricultural societies - a relatively accurate way of predicting their troubles etc.

I'd be interested to see the effect of the lessening of seasonal impact on development (air conditioning/heating systems etc.); I assume to some extent the human body evolved to function with cyclical seasons... Intelligence is only one facet, albeit the most interesting.

These results don't seem to be replicated in other animals, though -- the smartest non-human animals all live in hot climates, or the ocean (where seasonal variation is slight in comparison to land of similar latitude).

Heat doesn’t really do any good either: as temperatures rose we went from middle eastern civilizations (Egypt, Babylon, etc) to more northern civilizations (England, Germany, France, etc). With the fall of Rome the western idea of the center of the world scatter up north.
