At the very least, it takes an understanding of what it’s autocatalysing better than “simply bit manipulation”.

... Not only does consciousness (as such) almost certainly come for free, but there's probably a discount on the comparatively dodgy comes-with-consciousness version of the cognitive systems it's associated with.

It also implies an on/off condition of consciousness, obtaining in some organisms but not others, yet we observe capacity for reflexive thought pleasingly proportional to intelligence throughout the animal kingdom.

Then again, you see ants and even some fish pass the mirror test where many monkeys, dogs, pandas, and octopuses fail. But in exactly the same way that implies consciousness is (in some way) unshackled from general intelligence, it also implies it's not a very special quality.

You know next to nothing about evolution then. high intelligence has high evolutionary and energy costs. there's a reason so few animals have self awareness and complex methods of communication.
