Is there really a difference between Left and Right Patchwork? (I'd find a Left delivering Patchwork extremely hard to argue with.)

Yes. The right acknowledges that the point of patchwork is that you don't have control over what the other patches are doing. And that's fine because there's probably a patch to your liking; you can live there and damn the rest.
