Protestants: "Christ founded a Church so that christians could be united." Catholics: "But you aren't united. You have 1000s of denominations that actively contradict each other's teachings." Protestans: "Well, if YOU were THIS divided, things would be better!"

The "thousands of denominations" thing is pretty misleading because it counts every instance of administrative disunion as a meaningfully different church body, but that's probably not appropriate.

"Meaningfully different" means competitive. High-level doctrinal diversity might not be the essential factor here.
