Well, he was leaning towards Trotsky's proposition of 'The worse the better's, and said the mistake of such is the idea that individuals make history - (as opposed to processes, I imagine).

I think the general point was that the idea of 'The only way out is through' *seems* synonymous with Trotsky's 'The worse the better', where would the difference lie here, for an outsider looking in?

I hope the future is a combination of both prophecies. Artificially Intelligent nanobots scavenging the flesh laden trenches for morsels of scrap. Where *is* Kurzweil's 'future' though? Greer's is already arriving, K's is a little deflated...
