That's weak. The 'age' of oil won't end because our primary infrastructure is built with oil as its main energy input. "We're still in the age of petroleum because we assumed it to be infinite and now the age *can't* end without mass reversion."

Truly gargantuan reserves of alternative hydrocarbons waiting to come on-stream once the petroleum glut abates a little.

Good thing we've built the infrastructure to use them as a means for energy and societal use...oh wait, we're still focused on oil. Also there's limit energy sources out there with the input/output ratio of oil at the top of Hubbert's Peak.

Capitalism has done far more drastic energy infrastructure conversions before, without too much agony. Most probably it will provide a substantial economic stimulus.

Resisted that because coal is sticky. China and India, in particular, are going to be burning gigatonnes of the stuff for quite a while. ...

... The irony of electrification is that it facilitates deeply reactionary energy resource options. (Teslas will be mostly running on coal.)

true, although I think maybe concentrating solar energy is more likely the long-run path (which Tesla is already tapping into)

for one it has the advantage of being susceptible to decentralised production in a way basically no other energy source could be.
