You could use evolution by natural selection, ("Darwinism"), as a metaphor for the practice of science, but you could just as easily use some pseudo-scientific evolutionary theory like Lamarckianism or blending.

as you say, darwinism started in a strictly biological domain. but that misses the fact that darwinism has proven immensly fruitful in the rest of the sciences. you're mistaking darwinism, which has amply broadened its scope in the last decades, with evol. by natural selection.

This is a Geocities site from 2001. Maybe it's got interesting ideas but it's clearly disconnected from the practice of science.

You do know that Arxiv is a self-publishing, non-peer-reviewed site, correct? It's a nice resource but you can find everything from researchers' pet projects to people claiming they've proved Einstein is wrong on there.

if you're dismissing Zurek's work because it comes in an arxiv link I'm afraid we don't have much to discuss

I'm not dismissing anyone, I'm saying that a Geocities site and a couple Arxiv links are not good evidence. In any case, it's clear that the "Darwinism" here is completely metaphorical; as the actual paper never makes the case that physics follows some Darwinian mechanism.

Help him out here. A "genetic algorithm" is algorithmic Darwinism. ...

... Much terror of the D. word though. It sounds like losing.
