Russia's economy is the size of Italy. Yet it has suite of client states (much like US does) that buy its weapons and maintain friendly relations with it. Without nukes, all those states would be under US influence.

Aside from close US allies UK and France, countries with a nuclear arsenal have had a pretty good track record of conducting independent foreign policy.
