I'd credit the light bulb to Joseph Swan over the Thief of Menlo Park

So I'm told the lightbulb is a British invention. We're learning!

I don't think anything I've ever tweeted has so enraged people. And I've tweeted an awful lot of rubbish in my time.

I share it again because I'm genuinely intrigued at why it triggered such a vicious reaction. There's a Telegraph journalist who's been particularly unhinged by it. Quite bizarre. That said some really lovely stuff in between.

Me: "isn't English a wonderful confection of stuff with a fascinating origin. I wonder how many people know that?" Angry twitter: 'You're a traitor' 'we invented lightbulbs' 'you lefty wanker' ' you think language is like a soup' 'wanker' 12 hours of that. Quite extraordinary.

You don't buy "soup" in supermarkets. It's not labelled "soup" is it. You get "leek and potato soup" or "carrot and bean soup". I fear for my nation when people don't understand soup.

I've just had to explain the concept of "soup" to someone. There are people who don't understand soup out there.

I've heard the same story. Fairly certain Shakespeare was using Fall

Duck as used in Stoke and the East Mids comes from the Frech D’uc Meaning Duke as is therefore a term of gender neutral respect. Follow he’s got zillions of books on the subject.

You see this is the problem. Try to raise something nuanced and interesting and you get a mountain of tweets like this.

And that melange is no less English. It's the particular combination which makes it unique and that's what people should celebrate. It's both the ingredients and the final result which tell a story.

“The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.”

As for *Americanisms* a lot of them are actually old English words that have fallen out of use or been replaced. Diaper, "I guess" and "fall" being my favourites. But my diversion into etymology seems to have triggered a lot of people. Imagine getting triggered by etymology.

I said 'British people' not 'Brexiters' and yet hundreds of Leavers seem to have taken offence. I wasn't insulting anyone - I think many people don't know this. Perhaps take a chill (germanic) pill (latin) and stop (germanic) kow-towing (Mandarin) to assumptions (Norman French)
